Description
Friedrichshafen, Germany c. 1933.The frame of the LZ 129 is taking shape at the Zeppelin Works in Friedrichshafen. It was soon to be named after the late Paul von HIndenburg, the President of Germany, who died in 1934. The frame was made of Duralumin, one of the earliest aluminum alloys, and the skin was of to be of cotton that was doped with a mixture of aluminum and iron oxide to protect it against ultraviolet and infrared light. Unfortunately, this mixture reacted violently when it was heated, resulting in extremely high temperatures.
